Loosely translated from the original German
The "car of the eighties," the Porsche 928, remained unchanged in terms of its performance and handling. However, the scientists and engineers at the Porsche Development Center in Weissach significantly improved the fuel consumption of the 4.5-liter eight-cylinder touring sports car. According to the new, practical standard (DIN 70 030), the Porsche 928 consumes only 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers at a constant 90 km/h, 11.9 liters at a constant 120 km/h, and 17.6 liters in city traffic. In the automatic version, city consumption is even just 16.4 liters per 100 kilometers. These are extremely low values for a car of this power and size, and probably never before achieved. The increase in compression ratio from 8.5:1 to 10:1 contributed significantly to this result. At the same time, it requires premium gasoline.
The 4.5-liter, eight-cylinder V-engine made of light alloy produces 177 kW (240 hp) at 5,250 rpm. It is mounted at the front and connected to the rear transmission drive unit via a transaxle. This system, also used in the Porsche 924, ensures even weight distribution—50 percent front and 50 percent rear—and high traction for the driven rear wheels.
The robust, load-bearing steel body structure is fully galvanized and comes with a six-year Porsche warranty. Numerous aluminum components in the body and chassis, as well as the long-lasting engine, characterize the Porsche 928's high value retention. Low maintenance requirements and the worldwide customer service network ensure trouble-free and cost-effective operation despite its exclusivity. In this respect, the 928 is no different from the 924 and the 911 series.
