Loosely translated from the original German
The most economical sports car in its performance class: Top speed over 200 km/h Fuel consumption around 10 liters/100 km 6-year long-term warranty.
The Porsche 924, the most popular sports car Porsche has ever developed, received a 5-speed transmission as standard at the start of its fifth model year. It differs from the previously optional 5-speed transmission in its shift pattern: With gears 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and R on one level, it now corresponds to the shift pattern of the 911 SC. Porsche has thus responded to the wishes of numerous 924 customers.
The brake booster, which has been enlarged from 7 inches to 9 inches, provides greater comfort and noticeably reduces the amount of foot force required.
The Porsche 924 now comes standard with exterior mirrors that can be manually adjusted from the inside. The trunk light is automatically switched on when the large rear hood is opened. The fuel filler flap is now concealed.
The Porsche 924 has also become even more attractive externally. In addition to new colors, two-tone paint schemes, and new interior fittings, it differs from the previous series—again in response to customer requests—by adding black side window surrounds.
The functional concept of this economical sports car, however, has not been changed. The two-liter four-cylinder engine of the 924, capable of over 200 km/h (124 mph), produces 92 kW (125 hp) at 5,800 rpm. It is connected to the transmission and differential mounted on the rear axle via a central, rigid tube in the transaxle system. This allowed Porsche to achieve virtually balanced weight distribution and optimal handling.
The economy of the Porsche 924 is unsurpassed for a car in its performance class. In addition to the long-term warranty of six years and extremely long service intervals of 20,000 kilometers (12,000 miles), its very modest fuel consumption makes it even more attractive today: according to the new, practical standards, it consumes just 6.6 liters per 100 km (43.6 mpg imp) at a constant 90 km/h (56.6 mph), 8.1 liters (43.6 mpg imp) at a constant 120 km/h (75.7 mph), and 12.4 liters (43.6 mpg imp) in city driving.
