Uncompromising sports car: Porsche 924 Carrera GTS
Maximum performance and driving precision without sacrificing comfort

After production of the 400 924 Carrera GT road sports cars ended in early December 1980, Porsche will launch a small evolutionary series of pure competition cars in the coming months: the 924 Carrera GTS.

The two-liter engine of the Group 4 924 Carrera GTS, turbocharged with a maximum of 1.0 bar, produces 245 hp (180 kW) at 6,250 rpm. Its maximum torque of 335 Nm is available at just 3,000 rpm. The 924 Carrera GTS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, and its top speed is 250 km/h.

The sports suspension features wishbones and McPherson struts at the front, cast aluminum semi-trailing arms with coil springs at the rear, stabilizers, and Bilstein gas-pressure shock absorbers. The internally ventilated and perforated dual-circuit disc brakes, as well as the wheel hubs, come from the 911 Turbo.

The vehicle's pure sporting character, evident in its performance, is also reflected in its comfort: there is none, apart from the fact that sports drivers might consider the racing seats derived from the Porsche 935 to be comfortable. The interior is simply covered and carpeted with black needle felt. Porsche even omitted the damping material used in the 924 Carrera GT for weight reasons.

It weighs 1121 kg. Its price is DM 110,000 including VAT. This car can be registered for road use upon individual inspection in accordance with the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations.

For competitions: 924 Carrera GTR.

Active sports enthusiasts can also purchase the 924 Carrera GTS ex works in a rally and a racing version.

The rally package includes an engine upgraded to 280 hp, as well as a chassis modified for this purpose in terms of ground clearance and wheel suspension. This also includes underbody protection and an upper roll bar. The price of this vehicle version will be approximately DM 145,000. The racing version is directly derived from the 924 Carrera GT entered by the factory in the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans.

With a total weight of just 945 kg – the minimum required for Group 4 cars – it represents a faster and tougher offshoot of the GTS. The same basic engine in this car develops a maximum output of 375 hp (276 kW) at 6,400 rpm. It reaches its peak torque of 405 Nm at 5,600 rpm – a range where civilian machines already reach their peak performance. The top speed of this car is over 290 kilometers per hour. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Porsche has also ensured optimal downforce: The 924 Carrera GTR features the braking system of the legendary Porsche 917 and 935.

The price of this Porsche 924 Carrera GTR (Group 4) will be DM 180,000 including VAT.
