Porsche Carrera 3.0 - Power and Comfort

The Porsche Carrera 3.0 bears the name of what is arguably the most successful Porsche generation in motorsport. It, too, is characterized by high performance and driving safety, which, unlike all its predecessors, unfold more effortlessly, quietly, and comfortably. Porsche engineers have placed greater emphasis on comfort as a design goal alongside sportiness. By increasing the engine displacement from 2.7 liters to 3.0 liters, elasticity and pulling power (max. torque 26 mkg / 4,200 rpm vs. predecessor 26 mkg / 5,100 rpm) have noticeably increased, as comparative measurements clearly demonstrate.

While a Carrera 2.7 required 34.2 seconds to accelerate from 40 km/h to 160 km/h in direct drive, the new Carrera 3.0 achieves this in 30.9 seconds. The peak output of 200 DIN hp is reached at just 6,000 rpm. The acceleration figures (0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds) and top speed (over 230 km/h) are identical to those of the previous model.

Of technical interest: Porsche is now also using the more fuel-efficient K-Jetronic fuel injection system in the Carrera.

In terms of equipment, Porsche has equipped the Carrera 3.0 with features as standard, meaning at no extra cost, that are not even commonplace in the luxury class. These include, in particular, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, the choice between a 4-speed, 5-speed, or 3-speed Sporto-matic transmission, headlight washers, and power windows.

Porsche-Sportomatic

For the Porsche 911 and Carrera 3.0 models, the 3-speed Sportomatic transmission is available as a special order (at no extra cost for the Carrera), in addition to the standard 5-speed manual transmission. It replaces the 4-speed Sportomatic previously available only for the Porsche 911 and, technically speaking, combines a mechanical three-speed gearbox with a hydraulic torque converter. Power transmission is automatically disengaged via a vacuum-assisted, servo-controlled clutch as soon as the driver moves the gearshift lever.

The Porsche Sportomatic combines the advantages of a fully automatic transmission with those of a manual transmission. Depending on the traffic situation, the driver can shift gears lightning-fast or, with the appropriate gear selected, largely forget about shifting altogether. The Sportomatic therefore doesn't make the Porsche less sporty, but rather even more functional, especially in urban areas. Particularly in extreme traffic conditions, such as rush hour traffic with its constant stop-and-go, the Sportomatic clearly makes driving easier.
