Saroléa at Autoworld Brussels, 2022

A quiet reminder that Belgium once built world‑class motorcycles

In the summer of 2022, Autoworld Brussels hosted a temporary exhibition dedicated to Saroléa, one of Belgium’s historic motorcycle manufacturers. Titled “Saroléa Motorcycles – A Belgian Story”, it ran from 12 August to 18 September and gathered around 75 bikes tracing the brand’s evolution.

The approach was straightforward: a chronological display showing how Saroléa developed from early motorised bicycles in the early 1900s into a serious industrial player during the 1920s, when it built a strong international reputation for build quality and engineering.

The exhibition also reflected the more complex side of the story. Alongside refined road models were racing machines, a reminder of Saroléa’s involvement in competition and its technical ambitions. At the same time, the later sections highlighted the gradual decline after World War II, leading to the brand’s disappearance in the early 1960s.

Some rare pieces were included, occasionally unique or high-value factory racers, but the overall tone remained more historical than spectacular.

Outside the museum context, a gathering of Saroléa motorcycles took place in September on the esplanade of the Cinquantenaire, adding a practical dimension without turning the exhibition into a show.

In the end, the exhibition’s interest lay in its simplicity: it documented a Belgian manufacturer that once had global relevance, without trying to overstate its legacy. For many visitors, it was less about nostalgia and more about reconnecting with a lesser-known chapter of European motorcycle history.
