Fleche Wallonne 2012
In early March 2012, we experienced for the first time the atmosphere of the Antwerp Expo. Chill outside but, inside, the air was warm, thick with the scent of vintage leather, motor oil, and nostalgia. This was the 35th annual Antwerp Classic Salon—not just a trade show, but a three-day pilgrimage that drew nearly 30,000 petrolheads, grease monkeys, and casual dreamers from across Europe into a shared automotive sanctuary.
Managed by the SIHA team—the masterminds behind Germany’s massive Techno-Classica Essen—the venue was transformed into a bustling, 20,000-square-meter timeline of motoring history.
For the true gearheads, the heartbeat of the salon was the legendary autojumble. It was a sprawling marketplace where 350 specialized vendors from 14 countries laid out decades of mechanical history on oil-stained tables.
Here, finding a part wasn’t just a transaction; it was a victory. Collectors with grease under their fingernails huddled over bins of obsolete carburetors, hunted down impossibly rare wiring looms, and bartered over new-old-stock trim pieces. Scattered among the parts were over 300 classic cars looking for new homes—ranging from dusty, honest barn finds waiting for a second chance at life, to immaculate, numbers-matching showstoppers polished to a mirror finish.
While the commercial dealers brought the glamour, the local car clubs brought the soul. The organizers handed an entire exhibition hall over to regional classic clubs, turning it into a vibrant mosaic of automotive subcultures.
This wasn’t just a casual meetup. Backed by the Belgian Federation for Old Motor Vehicles (BFOV/FBVA), the clubs engaged in a friendly but fierce competition. Members didn't just park their cars; they built elaborate, time-capsule backdrops that transported onlookers to different eras—from a 1960s Parisian street corner to a retro racing pit lane. A technical jury scrutinized the displays, looking for historical accuracy, pristine engineering preservation, and sheer creativity. The result was a museum-grade spectacle driven entirely by amateur passion.
By the time the doors closed on March 4, the Antwerp Classic Salon had once again proven that classic cars are about far more than just metal and rubber. They are about the stories they carry, the hands that build them, and the community that keeps them alive.
